To determine if a film is appropriate for progressive audiences, we rate films through a new feminist rating system:

E EQUAL Passes Bechdel-Wallace Test* - Female/Feminist Director - Diverse Representation* in Cast, Staff, & Themes - May contain themes related to violence and/or sexual harassment/assault which provide an educational or moral benefit. P Patriarchal Does not pass Bechdel-Wallace Test AND/OR does not have Female/Feminist Director - Cis Male-centered Cast, Staff, & Themes - Contains violence and/or sexual harassment/assault for unknown benefit. M Misogynistic Does not pass Bechdel-Wallace Test* AND does not have Female/Feminist Director - Cis Male-centered Cast, Staff, & Themes - Egregious portrayal of violence and/or sexual harassment/assault with unknown benefit to theme.
A new rating system for films based on a feminist perspective.

The pattern of this rating system follows that of the system for parents you know from the Motion Picture Association (G, PG, PG-13, R, etc.), but it has been updated to reflect what is appropriate for moviegoers if they are concerned about diverse representation.

*Click here for more information on the Bechdel-Wallace Test. In the above tables, diverse representation means having characters and staff that are women, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color), LGBTQIA+ people, and people with diverseabilities (essentially, anyone who is not the traditional white, cis, neurotypcal, or physically typical male).
