COVID-19 and the Hiatus of Hollywood

It has been a strange time for everyone. COVID-19 has caused hardship and suffering for so many that I can’t even begin to describe how much my heart hurts for the world. I know there are a lot of different changes to routine lately for all of us – maybe you have been working this entire time as an essential worker, or you lost your loved-one or your job, or you are able to work from home, or you are a student learning from home, or you were sick and had to quarantine, or a combination of all of these at some point during the last several months.

As we know from the common experience of these tough times, distraction is sometimes the best way to make it through the day. My go-to way to distract myself from life’s problems is to watch films. I’m thankful that I have had these options available to me during the pandemic:

  • Netflix DVDs – yes, those are still a thing!
  • Video On Demand through an Apple TV or other devices
  • Drive-in movie theaters (for older movies)
  • Streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, etc.

Unfortunately, going to the movie theater like old times is not an option right now (it may be for you, depending on where you live, but it doesn’t seem like Southern California will be opening movie theaters any time soon). Movies I was looking forward to seeing in theaters– like Mulan, Wonder Woman 1984, Black Widow, Tenet, and others– will have to wait. I was looking forward to purchasing my tickets in advance for Wonder Woman 1984 for the midnight premiere on the Thursday evening before the release date and having a night out with my friends. We’ve done that for most of the comic book and fantasy movies that have come out during the past decade. The lack of this normality is a sad reminder of the many ways our lives have changed so drastically in the last four months.

This also means that reviews of new blockbusters will have to wait. In the meantime, I will rate and review films to which I have had access through the outlets mentioned above. In the future, I would like to cover films that are at the top of the box office. For now, I hope you enjoy the selection of film reviews that I post in the next few weeks.

If you find yourself with extra time lately, perhaps now is a good time to acquaint yourself with some films directed by women! Check out the list below:

What film recommendations do you have for watching at home? Are there any free/affordable streaming services you like? Let me know in the comments!
